I was on a team where we were directed to do Agile.
Unfortunately, the team, was generally weak (but to be fair, growing in strength), and coupled with a poor baseline, adding difficulty to predict scope. Nonetheless, we did fairly well, but at times we missed our goals.
One morning we walked into standup where our manager was ready and prepared with a graph of stories (and their points) charted against the amount of time it took to complete. NOTE: If this happens to you, feign a sudden illness and take the day off, because this is a clue that your morning is not going to be pleasant.
My manager, getting quite agitated about our ‘poor performance’, pointedly asked me to explain why one 3 point story took so much longer than another 3 point story?
I asked if we could discuss this offline, to which I was told, “Absolutely not, we were getting to the bottom of this as a team right now!”
I tried my best to nicely explain that while both stories were truly imho correctly categorized as 3 point stories according to our team’s definitions of scope and complexity, the different individuals assigned is why there are different timelines to completion.
To which both my manager and my teammates were angry.
Like it’s my fault one guy had to have 3 iterations of code reviews for their lousy work. lol
